Healing Out Loud.
— so others feel less alone. Promoting radical self-acceptance. And bringing low- and no-cost mindfulness resources to BIPOC communities. Because joy is our birthright.
I'm trying to heal out loud.
Most people who know me only see the accolades: the degrees, the New York Times headlines, the professional wins. What they don't see is the exhaustion. The self-doubt. Everything it takes, daily, to survive — as a Black woman, a neurodivergent woman, a mother, a wife, a friend, someone who pours herself into work that can feel less like a job and more like something to be endured.
From the outside, it can look easeful. Unattainable, even — like something you're supposed to emulate. I'm here to tell you: it matters how the sausage gets made. It matters how you feel. It matters what the voices in your head are saying when they're loudest.
So I'm starting here, in public, admitting there's room for improvement in my own internal experience. I have things I need to heal, and I've decided to try to heal out loud — even without all the answers, even though it's scary. Because running from your internal world isn't the secret to a fulfilling life. You deserve — we all deserve — the inner peace we've cultivated for ourselves. Other internal worlds are possible. Let's find them together.
I can't heal for you. That's yours to do. But I can tell you the truth, and I can go first. Joy is our birthright.
Chinyere Ezie (she/her) is a nationally recognized civil rights lawyer and social justice activist working at the intersection of racial justice, gender justice, and LGBTQI+ rights. An Ivy League graduate, her advocacy has been covered by the New York Times, Washington Post, MSNBC, Al Jazeera, and NPR, and she has been named one of the nation's Best LGBTQ+ Lawyers Under 40.
Black, queer, and neurodivergent, Chinyere cultivated her yoga and meditation practice to cope with the burnout that is all too common in activism and organizing — what started as a way to cope became a full return to herself, and then a calling. She is now pursuing her yoga teaching certification.
Alongside her legal work, Chinyere is the founder of Baddie Be Well™, which brings low- and no-cost mindfulness resources to Black, LGBTQ+, and neurodivergent people navigating burnout.
Chinyere lives in Los Angeles with her wife, their twins, and their beloved pets, Selma and Subzero.
